Speed Racer was designed and constructed in 1992-1993. Its first racing competition was the Solar Electric 500 at Phoenix International Raceway in March 1993. LAAE felt that Speed Racer was not through with its racing life however, so the Academy pulled it out of its retirement. From there, the vehicle continued on to compete in the California Challenge and 2014-2015 Emerald Coast Electrathon. Many changes were made so that Speed Racer can run in Electrathons such as changes in brakes, spindle, axle, motor, gears, and batteries.
Speed Racer was designed with a Permag 4-pole brush type motor and Go-cart steering type, as well as Double A-Arm suspension and a Curtis PMC model 1204-102 controller type. The electric vehicle ultimately measured 71 x 18 x 34 inches with a weight of 220 pounds.
