Solar Shadow II was constructed in 2001, five years after the first Solar Shadow was made. In 2001, LAAE entered the vehicle to compete in the American Solar Challenge. Los Altos was the only high school to have a vehicle compete in the challenge and finish the race.
Solar Shadow II was designed with a New Generation Corp. SC-M150-08 Wheel motor, and was constructed from dual-layer nomex honeycomb, carbon fiber, and fiberglass. Its average speed ranged from 35-45 mph, with its top speed being 60 mph. Upon completion, the vehicle measured 182 x 72 x 42 inches with a weight of 793 pounds.
Solar Shadow II built on the legacy of its predecessor, participating in the American Solar Challenge in 2001. The vehicle ultimately placed 22nd in the race.
