WHAT IS SOLAR CUP?

Sponsored by The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, as well as their member agencies, Solar Cup is an education program in which teams from various high schools are educated on water conservation along with renewable energy, through races with solar boats.

BUILDING A SOLAR BOAT

In this competition, students are required to build and race a solar powered boat within the duration of 7 months. Furthermore, the teams are to research and complete technical reports concerning the task, and create a water-related public service announcement.

OUR ROLE IN THE COMPETITION

LAAE particpates in this competition yearly, creating many solar-powered boats over the years, as part of our pursuit to a more cleaner future. Any member willing to put in the effort and show perseverance in this project can join.

OUR TEAMS INVOLVED

Design - Involved by using 3d software to design schematics of solar boat parts as well as painting designs on the boat to represent our program.

Mechanical - In charge of constructing parts from design’s schmatics and assembling them together. They also write technical reports to analyze the design process and methodology for the various functions of a solar boat.

Electrical - Takes care of the electrical components of the boat, including wiring and installing solar panels, and works with mechanical with technical reports too.

Composites - Has the role of creating materials that protect the electrical components of the boat, as well as sanding and expoxying the boat to avoid water leakage.

FUNDING OUR PROJECT

The Upper San Gabriel Valley Municpal Water District have supported us for many years in our Solar Boat activites, such as giving us funding for parts, materials, and electrical components.
